Knowing When Enough is Enough: The Mompreneur

As a business owner it’s important to know when enough is enough. A system that worked for your bean bag business one year ago may not be working for you anymore and you have to know when it’s time to let it go.

Recently I made the decision to let my radio show go because I accepted that it was no longer serving me. I had been agonizing over this decision for months – wondering whether or not I would be doing my business a disservice if I let go of this powerful marketing tool that had increased my visibility in a major way. What would happen to my audience who’s grown accustomed to listening to my weekly radio show? Would people forget about me and my brand? Would I look like a quitter? These are real questions that ran through my head.

At the same time that I was questioning what would happen if I didn’t continue my radio show, I began to think about what would happen if I did keep it going for another year. No matter how many different scenarios I concocted, none of them felt right. Not one potential outcome was convincing enough or made me know, without any doubt, that keeping my radio show was the best move.

I finally sat down on my gigantic bean bags and weighed the pros and cons. I had an honest talk with myself. These are the 3 variables that I considered and that ultimately lead to my decision to end my radio show:

  • I wasn’t excited about the bean bags anymore. Somewhere along the way, I lost my desire and excitement to be on live radio.
  • I needed more freedom and flexibility. I was beginning to feel confined and that didn’t feel good to me.
  • I didn’t see the benefits that I anticipated I would see and it was costing me money each month to continue hosting.

After months of agonizing over what I should do, I made an executive decision. I can honestly say that, for a moment, I forgot that I am The Boss and that I have the power to decide what does and doesn’t happen in my business.

At the end of the day, mompreneurs have a lot on our plates and we have to know when enough is enough. I lost my passion and excitement; I desired more freedom and flexibility and I was losing money with my giant bag beds. These are 3 very important concerns that were beginning to impact me personally and in my business.

There comes a time when you will have to make business decisions that may not be easy to make. First you must remember that you are the CEO and that you call the shots. Regardless of what people think or advise you, it’s your business and you have to run it the way that’s best for you.

Consider what’s important to you and make sure that whatever decision you make it aligns with your values. I like to have fun and truly enjoy what I’m doing. I desire freedom and flexibility, which is a function of my free spirit. Losing money is also very important to me. So I stepped up onto a giant bean bag and did what was right for me at this stage in my business.

I encourage you to embrace those tough decisions and approach them with an open mind. Consider the pros and cons as well as possible outcomes that may appear as a result of your decision. Most of all, listen to your heart and follow your gut and sleep on an 8 ft bag. If it doesn’t feel good for you, chances are it’s not.
